Why this costume
This project is in large part a test run of IndigoJinjo’s pattern for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Peach. Kirsty’s pattern is fantastic for the classic and movie versions of Princess Peach, and I wanted to have a go at this pattern to see what alterations I needed to make to turn this into her SSBU outfit.
It also served as a stashbuster. I’ve acquired an obscene amount of pink matte satins over the years, and this was a great excuse to clear some of that out!
How I made it
With ballgowns, a “skin-out” approach is often recommended. In other words, start with the foundational garments closest to the skin and move to the outer layers, which is exactly what I did with this costume.
Many of my foundational pieces are designed to also work with my upcoming SSBU cosplay, including the corset (the Tessa longline underbust pattern from Sew Curvy), chemise and bloomers (made using Casey Renee Cosplay’s Cosplay Foundations book), and petticoat (Truly Victorian’s Free Hoop petticoat). I also made a second petticoat using Cowbutt Crunchies’ The Cosplay Book of Ballgowns, but it’s a bit too powerful for this version of Peach. I’m saving that one for SSBU instead!
For the fashion layers, I made IndigoJinjo’s pattern pretty much as-is (with my usual FBA and tailoring adjustments) so that I could accurately evaluate what to change for SSBU. This is a pretty straight-forward pattern! The hardest part for me was figuring out what stacking method I wanted to use for my petticoats to get the desired silhouette.
The brooch is a resin 3d print using Illustris Models file. I broke some of the daintier pieces when trying to remove the supports and was pressed for time, so I wrapped the whole thing in Black Worbla. The piece attaches to my bodice via magnets. I had some trouble printing the crown, so I opted to purchase the DokiDoki one instead. My wig is a commission from the lovely Victoria Bane.
