Why this costume

I’ve been interested in cosplaying Mercury for some time now, in large part due to the desire to wear a sailor scout with a short wig (Uranus also fits that bill, but I sold that costume with my last cosplay clean-out). When I realized that with a little bit of planning, we had enough folks for a full inner sailor scout group at Anime Frontier, I decided to make Mercury to round out all the characters!

How I made it

As with my (many, many) other sailor scout costumes, I used Cosmic Coterie patterns and tutorials to make this build. There are only two major differences with this sailor scout versus some of my other senshi: 1) the front length of the skirt, and 2) making the tiaras.

Since I didn’t have time to purchase and alter boots for this build, I opted to make spandex boot covers using Yaya Han’s McCall’s pattern (M7397). These boot covers are very tall, so I shortened my skirt as much as I felt like I could comfortably get away with to keep my proportions in check.

This was one of the first times I made the tiaras completely from scratch. I cold cast the tiaras for Mercury, Jupiter, and Venus using Smooth-Cast 305. I’ve got a few things to tweak about my process, but it was a great trial run! I hope to be able to offer this for sale soon.

Thanks to Victoria Bane for letting me borrow her Mercury wig for these photos!
