why this costume
Ariel is one of my favorite Disney princesses. To this day, my parents still tease me about watching our old VHS copy so much that I wore the tape out!
This costume was the culmination of a few events: c80sthingamabobs had an opening late in the summer of 2019 for an Ariel wig, which I jumped on. I also wanted to throw something together for the 30th anniversary of the film, so I opted for this outfit, which has long been one of my favorites.
how i made it
To build this costume, I turned to Simplicity 5006. After giving the pattern a full-bust adjustment, I constructed the bodice using matte satin, domestic coutil for the strength layer, and Ariel-themed cotton for the lining. The blue top is made from a delightfully soft bamboo jersey from Mood, using Sewaholic’s Renfew top as a starting point.
My skirt is a floor length full circle skirt with pockets in the side seams that close with invisible zippers. I had the perfect lace trim in my stash – scallops with seashells! I stitched it in along with horsehair braid.
The bow is a modified version of my team’s (Cosmic Coterie) Venus bow pattern. Check it out on our website!
